Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Information Sheets

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a bit of a conundrum. It is a term used to describe a whole host of symptoms which may have a whole host of causes. We don’t tend to use the term in our clinic, we try and find out the underlying cause of your symptoms.

IBS affects a quarter of the population and is often diagnosed between the ages of 20 – 50.

Symptoms may include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Alternating bowel habit (sometime runny, sometimes hard)
  • Fatigue / Lethargy
  • Anxiety / Stress

Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

As stated above, the cause of IBS as a whole is not properly understood but symptoms indicative of IBS can be created by a varied combination of the subsequent factors.

Below are a series of causes:

Abnormal relaxation and contractions of the intestinal muscles, this can cause food to travel too slowly or quickly throughout the GI tract, which may induce muscle spasms.

Miscommunication between how the nerves in the body and gut talk to each other.

Imbalance of the bacteria (bugs) in the bowel which can occur from previous infections, food poisoning or antibiotic use, for example.

Low pain threshold for distension in the intestines may result in a build up of gas and fluids in the large bowel which then causes discomfort.

Imbalance of the bacteria (bugs) in the bowel which can occur from previous infections, food poisoning or antibiotic use, for example.
