About the day

Why this day matters

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are among the most common (and most poorly managed) conditions in clinical practice. From SIBO and leaky gut to carbohydrate malabsorption and microbiome testing, the gap between emerging research and what practitioners actually do is wide. This one-day course closes that gap.

Hosted by the Functional Gut Academy, the educational arm of the Functional Gut Clinic (the UK's leading specialist GI diagnostics centre) this full-day programme gives you a rigorous, evidence-based grounding in the diagnosis and management of functional GI conditions.

You'll leave with practical clinical knowledge, improved confidence in using diagnostic tools, and a clearer framework for when testing is appropriate and how to act on the results.

About The Functional Gut Clinic

The Functional Gut Clinic is a specialist diagnostic and treatment centre focused on functional gastrointestinal disorders. Founded by Professor Anthony Hobson, the clinic supports patients and healthcare professionals with evidence-based testing, clinical expertise, and practical guidance in areas such as reflux, motility, microbiome testing, breath testing, and wider digestive health diagnostics.

The Functional Gut Academy is the clinic's educational arm, created to help healthcare professionals build confidence in the diagnosis and management of gut health conditions through high-quality CPD training grounded in current evidence and real clinical practice.

Why Functional Gut Academy

Why learn with Functional Gut Academy?

This is not generic wellness education. The event is designed for healthcare and nutrition professionals who want a more rigorous, clinically useful understanding of functional GI conditions, testing, and evidence-based management.

Led by experienced clinicians and specialist faculty

Focused on practical application, not theory alone

Grounded in evidence and real-world clinical decision-making

Designed to improve confidence in diagnosis, referral and management

What you'll learn

Six core clinical areas, delivered across the day

01

Introduction to GI Physiology

Structure and function of the GI tract, digestion and absorption processes, and the role of fermentation and bacterial metabolism.

02

SIBO, Hypochlorhydria & Intestinal Hyperpermeability

Myth-busting the science around these widely misunderstood conditions. Pathophysiology, diagnostic methods including breath testing, and evidence-based medical and dietary management.

03

Carbohydrate Malabsorption

How to differentiate malabsorption from intolerance, which carbohydrates are most clinically relevant, and the diagnostic and dietary strategies that work.

04

Gut Microbiome Testing

An honest, evidence-grounded appraisal of available testing methodologies — their clinical utility, limitations, and how to interpret results meaningfully in practice.

05

Dietetic Approaches

Dietary and lifestyle management strategies supported by current evidence, with practical application for patient care.

06

Therapeutics & Manipulating the Microbiome

An overview of current and emerging microbiome-targeted therapies (prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and FMT) and how to apply them.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Understand normal GI physiology and its role in digestion, absorption, and fermentation

  • Distinguish between malabsorption and intolerance and apply the appropriate diagnostic approaches for each

  • Diagnose and manage SIBO, hypochlorhydria, and intestinal hyperpermeability using evidence-based methods

  • Critically appraise gut microbiome testing, understanding both its value and its limitations

  • Understand when functional GI diagnostic testing is indicated and what results mean in practice

  • Integrate emerging research into your clinical work with confidence
