What Gastric Alimetry?

Gastric Alimetry, also known as body surface gastric mapping, is a breakthrough, non-invasive test used to diagnose functional gastric disorders. Available at our clinics in Manchester, Cambridge and London, the test gives healthcare professionals a more accurate picture of what’s happening in the stomach. This can allow certain causes to be ruled out in favour of others.

How it works

A sticky patch is applied to the surface of your abdomen, where it senses and collects signals for 30 minutes while your stomach is empty.

You'll be given a light meal, then we have 4-hours of post-meal recordings to see how your stomach responds to food. You'll sit comfortably in a recliner chair, free to read, watch a movie, use a device or get out of the chair for a comfort break.

You'll be prompted every 15 minutes to update your symptoms on the app. This will provide real-time symptom changes for your clinician to interpret.

Preparing for your test

Before you test, there are some things we ask you to do, to ensure safety and accurate results. This includes stopping certain medication and fasting for a short period.

Please read our patient information leaflet for full details.

For 12 hours before your test

You must stop eating and drinking and fast for 12 hours before your test.

The day of your test

  • You can have small sips of water (maximum of 300ml) until 2 hours before your test

  • You may take your essential medicines with a small amount of water

  • You may brush your teeth

If you are diabetic requiring insulin or diabetes medicine, please ask your doctor if you should change your morning dose. Oral hypoglycaemic medicines are usually not taken that morning until completion of the test and you start eating again.

Getting your test results

The results will be be analysed by our clinical team to see if your stomach is functioning normally.

The device reads your stomach’s activity and provides doctors with data patterns that may relate to certain conditions. Meaning your doctor will have a clearer picture of the issue that’s causing your symptoms.

Following your test, your data will be analysed and results written up into a report.

The report will be sent to both you and your referring consultant/doctor, who will explain the results to you in a follow-up consultation.

Paying for your test

Self-paying: If you are paying for this test yourself and not through insurance, the cost will be £1,875.

This cost includes cost of the Gastric Alimetry test, analysis and report.

Insurance coverage

If you have private medical insurance, most companies can cover this for you.
