What is a pudendal nerve terminal motor latency test?

This test evaluates the function of the nerves in your pelvic floor which control your muscles in your back passage.

To do this we insert a finger-sized probe, with a small electrode on it, through the back passage into your rectum. A very small electrical current is then passed over your nerves causing your pelvic floor muscles to contract, and measurements are taken.

How it works

Your physiologist will conduct your test in a private room with a chaperone if requested. They will explain the test and ask about your symptoms. You will then be asked to get changed into a gown and lie on the bed ready for your test.

Your physiologist will insert a finger-sized probe with a small electrode into your rectum through your back passage. This may feel uncomfortable but shouldn't be painful.

Once in position, a small electrical current will stimulate your nerves, causing your pelvic floor muscles to contract for measurement. You may feel a pulsing, twitching, or prickling sensation, which could be slightly uncomfortable.

Preparing for your test

Before you test, there are some things we ask you to do, to ensure safety and accurate results. This includes stopping certain medication and fasting for a short period.

Please read our patient information leaflet for full details.
