Biofeedback is a therapy designed to help you better understand and control the muscles involved in bowel movements. During each session, specialized equipment provides real-time feedback on how your pelvic floor muscles and anal sphincter are functioning. By seeing this feedback, you can learn to adjust and improve muscle coordination, ultimately enhancing bowel control and relieving symptoms like constipation or incontinence.
Biofeedback can be beneficial if you experience:
Chronic constipation or difficulty evacuating
Faecal incontinence or leakage
Pelvic floor dysfunction impacting bowel control
Persistent symptoms not fully resolved by diet or medication
If you’re unsure whether biofeedback is right for you, we can assess your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.
What happens during the treatment?
An initial course typically includes one session every 6 weeks for 2-3 sessions. Follow-up or maintenance sessions may be recommended to keep symptoms under control.
During the session
A highly experienced GI physiologist or colorectal nurse specialist will take a full detailed history to better understand your symptoms. They will then create a personalised bowel retraining plan based on your symptoms. This may include bowel retraining exercises, visual feedback using anorectal manometry to understand how your muscles are working, dietary changes, lifestyle advice and medication advice.
After the session
You can resume your normal activities right away.
Biofeedback therapy is available on a self-pay and insured basis at a self pay price of £225 per session.
