Constipation Symptoms and Their Danger

March 28, 20252 min read

At various points in our lives, many individuals experience occasional constipation. Factors such as diet, disruptions to your normal daily routine, and medications can all contribute to this condition, and in many cases, the underlying cause is easily identifiable and manageable.

However, it is important not to ignore persistent or severe constipation, as it may signal more serious underlying issues with your digestive system. If left untreated, it can lead to serious medical complications, including infections and other related health concerns.

One of the primary concerns with severe constipation is the retention of stool within the colon. When faecal matter becomes impacted and heavy, it can stretch the colon, causing damage to both the colon and the anal canal. This can result in haermorrhoids due to the strain required to pass the stool. In more severe cases, constipation can lead to additional complications like infections and in rare cases, sepsis.

While constipation can cause significant discomfort and anxiety, prompting many individuals to seek quick relief through over-the-counter medications such as laxatives, these treatments often fail to address the root cause of the problem. Laxatives may provide temporary relief, but they do not resolve the underlying issue.

As we age, the likelihood of experiencing constipation increases. Additional contributing factors include a lack of physical activity, inadequate fibre intake, and insufficient hydration.

Severe constipation can be dangerous. If you have gone more than 3 days without a natural bowel movement, and this has been going on for more than 3 months, it is considered chronic constipation and it is essential you consult your doctor or GP. If you are caring for someone, it is equally important to monitor their bowel habits as well, to ensure they are not experiencing severe constipation without your knowledge.

While discussing bowel habits may feel embarrassing, it is crucial to avoid any long-term damage or health issues. If constipation becomes a recurring problem, seeking advice from a gastrointestinal specialist is highly recommended. A specialist will be able to give you more in-depth advice that goes beyond prescribing over-the-counter medications like laxatives. This will address the underlying cause and provide a long-term solution.

Pay attention to your body and take any concerns seriously – no matter how private or embarrassing they may seem. Addressing your concerns early can prevent more serious health complications from occurring further down the line.
