Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) involves transferring gut bacteria from a healthy donor into another individual. The aim is to introduce a new, diverse microbial population into the gut. It's also referred to as Intestinal Microbiota Transfer (IMT).
It’s most well-known as a highly effective treatment for recurrent Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, but researchers have also been exploring its role in other conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
The treatment is designed to help restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which may be disrupted in some individuals with chronic digestive symptoms. FMT is currently considered an investigational approach for IBS.

Whether you’re looking for answers to ongoing gut symptoms or want to optimise your health, book your microbiome support below.
IBS is a complex condition with many possible causes, from food sensitivities and gut-brain signalling to microbial imbalances.
Recent clinical studies have looked at the role of FMT in managing IBS, particularly in people with constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C). While the evidence is still emerging, early studies suggest that FMT may improve symptoms in select patients, particularly those who haven’t responded to other options.
At the Functional Gut Clinic, we’ve been involved in this evolving area of research and continue to explore the microbiome as a promising avenue for personalised IBS support.
FMT (or IMT, intestinal microbiota transplant) is currently available under specific regulatory conditions as a "specials" treatment. You can read more about FMT on our blog here, or get in touch to discuss your options with us.
Once your test results are ready, you’ll receive clear, easy-to-understand results, along with treatment guidance based on your results. This may include evidence-based information around diet, lifestyle and supplements. Depending on your results, we may also discuss more advanced treatment options suitable for you.
If your results indicate that further clinical input is needed, we can arrange a consultation with one of our expert clinicians. This may include a neurogastroenterologist (specialising in gut-brain connection, hypnotherapy, gut-focused yoga), a consultant gastroenterologist, or a GP for further treatment options.
FMT has been used in clinical practice for over a decade. In cases of C. diff infection, it has demonstrated high success rates and a favourable safety profile.
Mild side effects can include temporary bloating or changes in bowel habits. Serious side effects are rare and are usually associated with underlying health conditions. FMT is not appropriate for everyone, which is why we follow a strict eligibility process and medical screening before considering it as part of a care plan.
FMT is not appropriate for people with:
A history of inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer
Active infections or immunosuppressive conditions
Ongoing use of antibiotics or recent antibiotic treatment
Certain surgical histories or digestive conditions unrelated to IBS
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
You’ll be guided through a full eligibility assessment with our team to ensure the service is safe and appropriate for your needs.
Disclaimer: This page is for information only and is not medical advice. All treatments are based on a thorough clinical assessment and results vary between individuals. FMT is only considered in select patients following a full clinical review. This is not considered to be a first-line treatment and is not suitable for all cases of IBS.
Our guided self-assessment tool asks you some simple questions to find out more about your symptoms, so we can share personalised recommendations for the most suitable diagnostic tests for you.
